TOTAL Ministries is pleased to be the benefactor of the 3rd Annual Hub City Empty Bowls Project. We applaud the efforts of Joey Geier, the Hub Bub staff, and every individual that attended one of the many sessions to make a clay bowl. This event is truly bringing our community together for a greater cause, and we certainly hope that everyone will plan to attend on Thursday, January 26th.

Daily there are hundreds of individuals in Spartanburg County that simply struggle with finding food to eat. In fact, data shows that more than one out of seven households are food insecure, which means they do not always know where they will find their next meal. Over the past 12 months, TOTAL Ministries’ Food Pantry and Mobile Food Pantry programs have distributed close to 300,000 pounds of foods to over 12,000 households. The bags of food come from food drives supported by schools, scout troops, churches, and most importantly, individuals like you. The bags contain many of the basic food staples, such as peanut butter, jelly, canned green beans, corn, and a bag of grits.

We ask for your continued support, and hope that you will join us for the 3rd Annual Hub City Empty Bowls event on Thursday. The event is unique in that you pick one of the many handcrafted bowls, which will be filled with a delicious soup from one of the many local restaurants. Each of the restaurants participating have graciously prepared and donated the available soups. In addition, a variety of local musicians will be providing entertainment throughout the event.

All of us at TOTAL Ministries thank all of you for finding the time to make this commitment, and for getting involved in this great event. Your effort has made a profound impact.

Mark Miller has been kind enough to organize local musicians for Hub City Empty Bowls. Here is a post from him on how he became involved:

In 1992 I organized a benefit concert in Beaufort SC for the Salvation Army. I was in a band at the time, knew the club owner and solicited many musicians and bands I had worked with live and in the studio. The admission to the concert was non-perishable food items. That caught on and it became an annual event. Since then I have always tried to find a way to give back to the community in any capacity possible. I was approached by my friend Jim Cullen in 2009 and asked if I would be interested in organizing the music for that years Empty Bowls. I jumped at the opportunity and am excited to be involved with the entertainment for the third year. We have a great pool of talented artists, some like myself performing for the third year as well. We look forward to many more and ask the community to make a point to come out, buy a bowl, eat some soup and enjoy the music..

CNN recently posted this feature about Empty Bowls, a project begun by our friends Lisa Blackburn and John Hartom. It’s a terrific concept – community meals, eaten from handmade ceramics donated by local artists, raise money to help feed the hungry. (You can see a couple of local ceramic artists, including our neighbor Cynthia Bringle, working in the video.)

You can read the companion article, which includes profiles of several other innovative and inspiring approaches to ending world hunger, here: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/12/world/iyw-how-to-help-hunger/index.html

“Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity.”

www.emptybowls.net

Empty Bowls events now regularly take place all over the country and around the world, including a dinner recently hosted here at Penland by Suze Lindsay & Kent McLaughlin‘s fall concentration clay class. Here’s a picture of the bowls produced for the event (photo by Fletcher Larkin):

We’re proud to have such active, generous, compassionate friends. You make us believe, more than ever, that art and craft can make a difference. Keep up the good work!
